About us and Men's Sheds
Alton Men’s Shed is a registered charity that aims to improve the well being and mental health of adult men and women. Based in Anstey Park, Alton, a workshop has at last been secured in the former St John’s Ambulance station, known as The Edgar Hall. This ensures we can now develop our workshop and an increased membership can be safely accommodated. Alton’s rapidly growing community finally has the Shed it has longed for.
As men often don’t address their health problems, they often go untreated until it is too late, whether they recognise them or not. The Men’s Shed concept aims to address these issues especially for older men. Today retired men often live longer than twenty years ago and can suffer from the onset of boredom, depression, loneliness, or bereavement impacting their quality of life. The men's sheds, of which there now many, try and change this by a community initiative that can improve the physical, and psychological well-being of the whole person, allowing retirement to be more enjoyable, while helping others and improving their self worth. A major boost to mental health with a sense of belonging and involvement. Social events are frequently organised and some members come just for a chat and a cuppa whilst others enjoy the challenge of trying new skills.
The idea of a Men’s Shed, brings together men of all backgrounds, developing their own well-being as well as feeling they can still be a participant in the community, whilst forming new friendships and camaraderie together.
